September 2020 racist messages were written over Black Lives Matter wording on the rock at the front of campus. The Akron Beacon Journal quoted on September 10th: In three cases, messages and symbols in support of the Black community were covered with the words “White Lives Matter” and most recently “Blacks have no home here.”
These attacks prompted protest marches on campus followed by the formation of a task force to discuss anti-racist actions. Task force and conversation are a great start but as Nikole Hannah-Jones, of the NY Times, has pointed out Universities put together task forces to talk about Anti-Racism. Then as the group of students who advocated for change graduate the task force is disbanded and talk ceases. No action or follow through is completed.
The BIPOC students at KSU both present and future need the action of alumni to support their safety and promote equality for everyone. January of 2021 Nicole Pearce and Dyanne Williams banned together to create this letter writing campaign in support of the Anti-Racism actions taken by the school and to ensure long term follow through.
